Wood Sage Pearl Anania verbascalis

  B&F: 1382

ABH: 63.023

Status:  Unknown

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare

Primary Habitat:  Wasteground, Woodland rides

Wingspan:  22-26mm

Flight Period:  June - July, sometimes into mid September

Observations:  Principally a moth of the south-east, adults can be found by day and attend light traps. As the vernacular name suggests, the larvae feed in a tubular spinning on Wood Sage, over-wintering in the larval stage, before pupation in spring. There is some evidence however, that it might also utilise Great Mullein. The main larval foodplant appears to be fairly uncommon in VC32, with only a few entries in the BSBI database, but Great Mullein is a fairly common species locally.
