Proutia betulina

B&F: 0188

ABH: 11.011

Status:  Resident

Distribution/Abundance:  Rare

Primary Habitat:  Woodland

Wingspan:  Males 12-13mm

Flight Period:  May - July

Observations:  A nationally rare species, with relatively few known colonies. The case-bearing larvae may be found on Birch tree trunks in Spring. The larvae are believed to feed on various lichens, decaying vegetation and possibly Birch leaves or catkins in Spring. The females are wingless but males might be encountered during the day. The first VC32 record was of two larvae which crawled out of a collection of fallen Norway Spruce cones (gathered in early March in order to record Cydia strobilella on the site). There are mature Birches growing in amongst the Spruce plantation, so the assumption is that they originated from there.
